Question:My dentist recently told me that my left side is not touching when I bite down, but my right side is leaving a gap on the left side. My concerns are that I maybe applying too much pressure to the right side when chewing. Is there something that can be done to correct this? Would I need to consult with an Orthodontist?

Thanks,

Is this something that will just go away with time, or something I should have checked out.

Question:I need a cavity filled, and the dentist is saying that I need a $51 "Desensitizing" treatment that lines the tooth before the filling to make the filling stick. My insurance refuses to cover this service, although the literature says that they cover fillings. Is this treatment necessary, or should I just get the basic filling?

Question:I am 60 years old and have had extensive dental work done over many years. I had a class 3 occlusion which was restructured by an appliance to open my bite, then building up of teeth, then fixed bridgework to hold it all together. This was done over a 10+ year period and completed about 2 years ago. Everything was fine but my dentist retired and I have searched through 6 dentists in an attempt to find someone who could help me to maintain all this work, especially "tweaking" my bite, which always seemed to need adjusting. Unfortunately everyone I saw was unfamiliar with my situation and didn't want to mess with what I have. I have since lost 2 anterior teeth and have gone into a flipper, lost a lower left replaced tooth, and just 3 weeks ago lost another 3 unit fixed bridge on the lower right - tooth extracted - (due to severe pain and dead nerve). Problem is when a lower partial was inserted I developed ear pressure that I can't clear in my right ear. After a few days the pressure started in my left ear, although not as bad. An oral surgeon has checked and there is no tooth fragment left or other obvious problem related to the extraction. No one seems to understand how to fix the jaw malaignment (jaw shifted after I started losing teeth) or how to help me get relief from the constant ear pressure. By the way, I located the retired dentist who did the work and he worked on me to try to shift the jaw back, which did happen, but it still has not helped with the awful ear pressure. At this point I'm ready to get everything out and go into dentures, but no one can say if that would stop the pressure. I'm scared and starting to feel hopeless. Can you recommend anything at all???

Question:I had a filling replaced and came home to find that the dentist had cut my tongue with the drill! I didn't know at the time because it was numb... It was a decent sized cut and I started crying at the sight of it. I called back and the receptionist said I should come in and have the head dentist take a look (not the dentist that did it). The head dentist looked at it and said that it "happens all the time." And he mumbled something about that he bit his tongue badly a week ago and it didn't stop bleeding for 4 days (not sure if that was the truth or not but I think this was an attempt to say that it will take a while to heal but not to worry). Anyways, I have talked to other people about it, and showed other people and they have never heard of a dentist cutting anybody's tongue. It skimmed the side of my tongue and cut a decent sized chunk out of it too. This was only my second visit to this dentist's office. What should I do?! And does it really "happen all the time" like he said? My tongue hurts when I talk or eat (ie. when I move it).

Question:a few years ago I had a root canal done by a fill in dentist at my regular dentist's office (she was going away on holidays). The root canal took approx 2 hours and my tooth never felt good after the procedure. It felt so unconfortable that I did not get a crown put on. 10 months later the tooth broke and I returned to my dentist's office. They took xrays and asked me what the dentist has said about the broken drill bit in the root canal. He had not mentioned anything about the broken drill bit, so I decided to go see another dentist. They confirmed the drill bit was lodged in the canal, and proceded to try to repair the tooth. At the time of the root canal, the dentist had put a permanent filling on the tooth, but when my new dentist opened up the tooth it was full of decay. There is very little real tooth left, and my next option would be for a dental implant. Do I have the right for a refund from the first dentist who broke the drill bit and did not tell me?

Question:I had a root canal performed almost 3 years ago on my upper 2nd molar, I had no dental insurance and the dentist and I came to an agreement about how much it would cost. When it ended up costing more than I could afford I never went back for the cap, bad move I know. Later the tooth eventually broke and now all that is left is the root and a hole from where my tooth used to be. What procedure would a dentist have to perform to correct my mistake? And how much should it cost? And are there any legit dental plans that I can purchase to help ease the financial burden from such a procedure? Could this problem be causing my sinus headaches?

Question:Hi. My six year old daughter has an extremely loose top front tooth that has been holding on crooked for several months now. This will make the second tooth to come out. She pulled the first tooth out and it bled a little and now she is really scared about this one. It is so loose that I have several concerns: 1. is she going to choke on it, 2. she is having trouble eating properly because she will not eat close to that tooth and 3. she is not brushing properly because she is afraid that the tooth will be accidentally knocked or come out. What should I do??? Should I just relax and let it come out eventually, or should I insist that it gets pulled by either her me or dentist? Thank you!! Concerned Mom, Kay Neal

Question:I recently had all four of my wisdom teeth removed. I feel fine, with minimal pain. I am currently training to run a big race, but my dentist told me not to run for an entire week. He said that walking on a treadmill on an incline is fine, but that seems to be just as much pounding as running. Taking a week off would seriously hurt my training, and I am wondering if it is possible to begin running sooner. Would biting down on gauze afterwards help to make sure the clots aren't ruptured? Also, would treading water be alright? My body is used to rigorous running, up to 12 miles a day, so if I take it easy, only 5 miles or so, would I be OK?
Thank you!

Question:Hi. I saw my dentist 4 days ago about a cracked tooth that had previously been filled and repaired. The filling had broken again and it was giving me pain especially at night. The dentist thinks it will have to be removed and we discussed a denture, but as this was only an emergency (ie, short) appt he didn't take the impressions then, just gave me a script for antibiotics and advised on pain killers.

I have been taking the penicillin and pain relief (paracetamol and ibuprofen) but the pain is now unbearable. I cannot see my dentist again until Monday at the earliest. Have you any other suggestions which might help? I am feeling pain in my ear and have a hot spot on the side of my face, does this mean the antibiotics aren't working? I could feasibly see an emergency doctor tomorrow if you think they can prescribe something. I am in the Uk if that helps

Many thanks

Question:I have two quick questions..
I just recently had a tooth filled on my upper left side about a week ago. For the first time in my life I braved novacaine. I had a dimple on the left side of my cheek. It has not come back since he gave me novacaine. I called my dentist to ask what happened and he said he has never heard of this problem. I know its weird, but is my dimple gone forever?
and secondly..I have horrible popping and cracking of the jaw. I do grind my teeth and my jaw does get stuck occasionally. My own dentist cringes at how loud it is. He recommended a nightguard but will that honestly help at all?

Question:I have a bridge on my lower left side with 3 teeth and a bridge on my lower right side with 3 teeth. I went to the dentist and she said the teeth underneath are gone she wants to remove all 6 and put in a partial. I am so afraid that I will not be able to handle a partial. She wants to hook them on my bottom lower front teeth.
She has recemented the bridges a few times already but after awhile they pop up. Oh........is there any other thing we can do instead of taking the roots out and putting in partials? I eat perfectly fine with the bridges I wish I could continue keeping them in. She also suggested implants I cannot afford that. Are partials the only alternative I have?

Question:Dear Dr. Web,
For 3-5 weeks the whole upper left side of my mouth has been hurting.

The pain started out in one tooth and I figured I needed a root canal. I already have three and I have really bad teeth. (My dentist says I have "calcification" on my teeth- white spots).

Then, the pain went away. I have had that happen to me before and usually the abcess just comes back and hurts again but occasionally the pain has just stopped and never come back so I decided to wait and see.

Well, now the pain is worse (of course) and starts when I begin chewing. It isn't a sharp pain like when I normally need a root canal that is centralized in one tooth. Instead, it starts in all of the teeth that are involved in chewing (on the upper left hand side of my mouth). Including my front left incisor, cannines and the pre-molars.

The weird thing about it is that I already have a root canal in one of the teeth on that side and it starts hurting sometimes too... which is one of the reasons I thought maybe the pain was phantom.

Well, now I'm concerned about it because it is very strange to have the entire upper left side of my mouth hurt. Plus, when I floss the space between my root canal tooth and my back molar then it really hurts. The gum feels inflamed and it is very annoying because the two teeth have a weird space between them and food is always getting stuck up in there.

I got the crown placed on the tooth at least 4 months ago... therefore, it is weird that the gum would still be inflamed from that. Maybe I have an infection? I am seeing my dentist on Monday but I am really really worried. Any ideas what it could be? Have you ever had to give someone a root canal on a whole side of their mouth before?

Thanks

Question:Hi there.

I'm right now recovering from an especially nasty case of pericoronitis. I'm on my last day of clindamycin (300 mg 4 times a day for 7 days) and the infection seems to be under control -- the pain is completely gone and I can eat solid food again. The problem, however, is the swelling. The infected gum flap actually swelled OVER the partially erupted wisdom tooth (my lower left), and while the swelling has decreased significantly in the past week, it just won't go away completely. It's still covering the tooth and tends to puff up from time to time when irritated. Also, the lymph nodes on that side of my neck are still a little swollen. Is this typical for a bad case of pericoronitis? Will the swelling EVER go away completely? I understand that I need to have the tooth extracted, but I'm waiting another month until I'm married and able to hop on my husband's dental insurance. What can I do to make the swelling go away? Thanks in advance!

Question:Dr. Web,
Yesterday morning I went to the Orthodontist to receive braces. I wasn't really aware of what they were putting on my teeth. Two of my top minor molers (i think that's what they're called) are going to be extracted in the next couple of weeks, so they left the brackets unfinished for my dentist to take them out. Because of this (I'm assuming that's the reason) there are two blue-colored, hard, molded balls on the very surface of both of the last molers on either side. They're hard to get used to and I had a couple of questions: Why are they there? Is it safe to chew with these teeth? Do they require any other cleaning technique? Will they possibly be taken out at the next visit or will I have to deal with them for the next two years of treatment?

Thank you,
Jessica

Question:I am 27 yrs old. I have not had big problems with my teeth. I have had maybe 4 cavities when I was in middle school. I recently saw a new dentist. He did xrays and said there is decay under one of my fillings and that there wasn't enough tooth left to justify refilling it, so he wants to put a crown there. My mom suggested I get a second opinion b/c she thinks I am too young for a crownand people usually get those when they are in their sixties. Should I trust the dentist based on what I've told you?

Question:I had my wisdom teeth out 4 days ago. I am still in extreme pain--my ears hurt, I'm swollen, and I can't open my jaw and talk. The scariest part is I can't feel my entire bottom lip or bottom row of teeth at all! I'm a music teacher and cannot talk or sing like this! I have a performance in 2 weeks! I'm so afraid my professional life will be severely affected, as well as my sex life since my husband and I love to kiss and kissing a numb bottom lip is like kissing a dead fish! I was not told it would be like this and now the oral surgeon says this numbness may be permanent! What can I do?

Question:A month ago my right lower 3rd molar started hurting badly. It has a 20 year old filling in it. I went to the dentist, he xrayed it, and said it looks good, xray looked clean, no decayed tooth. He put me on antibiotics an novacane, then drilled out the old filling. Found nothing but good tooth. Filled hole with medicated filling for 6 weeks, then he will replace filling if all is ok. Pain has returned, 10fold, and there is a swollen lump under the gum below the tooth, on the outside of tooth, near my cheek. Is a root canal necessary, or could there be some other cause? Lower right jaw is swollen.

Question:I am very concerened. I went to get my teeth cleaned and during the cleaning the hygenist applied a clear liquid desensitizer on my teeth. She also said it seals the pores in my teeth and lasts forever. I am worried because I dont know what the chemical is she used and my teeth feel weird and numb. I cant sense anything on my teeth I can hold an ice cube between two teeth until it melts and not feel anything. Is this safe? What chemical do you think hygenists use to do this? Does it last forever really? Also if she sealed off my pores how can I whiten my teeth now? Dont the pores need to be open to whiten them? Please respond soon I am so upset. Question:I have a daughter that is 3 years old. Her gums have become very red and swollen. Our dentist says she needs a full mouth debriment and she'll have to receive gas for the procedure. I'm looking for any alternatives to this.
I have two questions.
1. With her teeth being brushed once to twice daily by myself how could this happen?
and
2. My husband and I are very concerned with her receiving gas at such a young age. Are there any alternatives to this procedure?

Question:hello,

my name is Oshawnda Hines and on thursday october 11th I recieved five shots of novacaine in my lower back jaw. The dentist was not able to fully make the area numb, so He filled the teeth anyway. He told me that since he could not numb me he had to just refill the teeth. That was fine with me. Later that night after the initial numbness wore off, I noticed that I could feel sensation in my tounge but I ahd no sense of taste on the right side of my tounge. I called my doctor that saturday and told him what was going on and he told me it should be better by monday. On monday the sense of taste had not returned so I made an appointment. He basically said at the appointment that something else must have caused the loss of taste because that is not common with this type of filling. Now I know that this happened directly after his procedure, and it is the only thing that could have caused this. After 1 week taste has still not returned. What should I do? Ive read that if I wait to long and it is lingual nerve damage it might become irreversable. I dont have the money to see another doctor, should I ask this doctor to pay for my bill? He is denying any responsibility for the whole mess and frankly is irritating me. Please give me some advise on the steps I should take to resolve the matter.

thank you

Question:It started with a crown. After having it done, I ended up having to get a root canal because I was having so much pain. The root canal didn't work because it was too decayed, so they extracted it. It was the next to the last molar, so now I am getting a three tooth bridge (two crowns & a fake tooth in place of the missing one). The real problem is that every time I have work done now, I have excruciating pain that last for weeks. I have throbbing pain in the side of my face & jaw (right side), my jaw is swollen & extremely sore. It has a large sore lump right on the jaw bone the size of a quarter. I assume it is swelling. I have this sharp pain in the side of my face & sharp pain in my right ear. I even felt sick at one point (flu-like). My dentist keeps giving me Vicodin for the pain because it is so bad. When I ran out, I took 2 650 mg tylenol every 7-8 hours. It helps, but the pain will not go away. It has been a week this time around so far and I still have the pain. Do you think it is some allergic reaction or some other type of reaction to the shots? I even had red blotchiness on my face for a few days. Any information will be of great help. Thanks.

Question:I have gone to a dentist (this is my third visit). I wanted to get a routine 6 month cleaning (although I have lapsed for 2 years at this point due to lack of dental insurance, my old dentist not being available through my new insurer, etc). When going I was told I needed a debriment, which was costly. I scheduled an appointment for this, and was not even given the debriment as I was then told I intsead needed another procedure where a deeper scaling would be done, and some sort of capsule placed in pockets that had formed in my gums. Each pocket to be filled is $25 dollars...my total bill being over $1000 dollars!

I have two questions. Are there any alternatives to the last treatment I am being told that I need (special mouth washes etc that could help seal the pockets without the expensive procedure done).

My second question. I asked if in the meantime while raising money to be able to get the treatment I need if I could get my routine free 6 month cleaning, and I was refused. They said it is their policy to not allow this cleaning to be done if I need other treatments done. This seems irresponsible as a cleaning would definitely be somewhat (although not fully) beneficial to the tops of my teeth and prevent further damage up there...is denying me this routine cleaning normal? This does not seem like it would be a standard procedure to me especially since it is preventative maintenance.

Question:I am a healthy 38 year old female. Very active, exercise regularly. I brush 2x a day and floss at least 3 times a week. I went for a normal check up and cleaning yesterday and a cloudy/white spot was found in the panoramic x-ray of my gums. It is not a painful spot and I have never had any problems with my gums.

The dentist said he would send it off to an oral surgeon with his suspicions, but did not tell me what those suspicions were.

What are the possiblities?

Question:My daughter is 29 months old. She has a nonprogressive physical disability called arthrogryposis. She was also born with severe micrognathia. Due to the micrognathia and delayed swallowing, she has a g-tube for all feeding. Her TMJ was tight at birth, but with massage it is now loose. However, during speech therapy today we noticed that her back molars touch. Her front teeth do not. Her teeth seem abnormally large. She can close her lips but it is hard for her to do. Her speech is therefore delayed. My question for you, without using her teeth for masticating, do her teeth continue to grow? Her speech therapist said she had heard that somewhere. I am wondering if her molars are so large she cannot get more closure. That is what it looks like. She does eat some by mouth, but she doesn't really chew. I am also wondering what we can do to correct this. Thank you for your time.

Question:I have a huge problem. The last time I went to the dentist (6/7 years ago) I was told I needed a $900 rootcanal. I couldn't afford it then, and I can't afford it now. My gum below my right rear molar has swollen to the size of a golfball and hurts so bad. The gum seems to be trying to grow upwards and over my teeth. I can't eat, my wife says I look like a squirrel trying to hide nuts in my cheeks. The pain is worse than when I broke my arm, unbearable... and I'm not sure what to do. I've been taking meds to kill the infection but it only helps for alittle while. In the past I've went to the emergency room at my local community hospital and was told their dentist is only there one week a month! I *really* can't afford a regular dentist, so my question is: Do most dentists have payment plans for us poor folk? Should I just go to the hospital and have it taken care of there? I'd appreciate any advice, thank you.

Question:Dear Dr. Web,

It has been 9 years since I last visited the dentist and unfortunately I haven't been able to afford to go since then. About 6 years ago the 6th upper tooth on my right-hand side started to get a little black lining at the top of it. Sometime later I awoke with the right side of my face completely swollen! After a couple of days in agony the pain subsided and everything seemed back to normal. Several years later my tooth cracked and eventually completely broke apart during a meal. It's been atleast 2 years since then and I haven't really had any pain until recently it's been feeling a bit sensitive in that area of my mouth and a nearby tooth feels kind of loose. I've also noticed that my gums occasionally bleed when I brush my teeth. Well enough of my life story. My question for you is, could I have a more serious underlying condition and what do you think may be the solution?

I'd greatly appreciate your help!

Ruth

Question:My dentist's have just changed hands and the new dentist wnts me to have xrays as I have peridentitus. The old dentist used dentamycim every time I had an abcess- usually every couple of years. The new dentist has not bought the stocks of dentamycin from him and is suggesting deep scaling could solve problems. Is deep scaling the answer and is it possible to reverse peridontitus? Also how efficient in the long term is dentamycin? I am 44 years old and have had this problem for about 5 years. I floss and inter space every day. Do you think the new dentist is right or should I look for another? I feel confused and am not confident with the changes and conflicting opinions. Please help me understand! Thank you

Question:I am 56 and have all my teeth, with fillings on all my molars, and fully erupted wisdom teeth. My bottom left wisdom tooth had a large filling 31 years ago. I have no symptoms, but my dentist noticed some decay below the gum line on that tooth in an X-ray. He recommends extraction of the tooth. He said it would be possible to save the tooth with a root canal, etc., but he doesn't think it's worth it. Do you think it might be worth it to save the tooth? Question:Hi. I was wondering about an abcess tooth that I have had for almost 6 months. While I was unaware of the abcess for the first few months, recently part of the tooth broke off (which did release the pressure off the tooth)however, it has begun to form a white puss bubble on the gum-below the tooth. I have been told that the puss is toxic. What exactly is in the puss that makes it toxic, and, how does it effect my overall health? Since I can't afford to go to the dentist, I am concerned about how long I can go on with the abcess. Also, can the abcess spread to aurrounding teeth, and what is the best possible treatment?? The tooth is located on my left side on the bottom, 3rd from the back next to my molar. Thank you for any information you can give to me, I appreciate it greatly.

Question:I have had a bridge for 4 teeth upper right side, and a bridge for 3 teeth lower right side.
I have extreme sensitivity whenever I eat or drink anything, not necessarily very hot or cold.
I must have been to the dentist around 50 times in the last year for problems with these teeth. I have had nerves taken out, but now the dentist has put the bridges in permanently, as she said the teeth were fine. (although I obviously know different)!

Question:Recently I went in for a cleaning and a check up. I was told I had 9 cavities however didn't have any problems or pain. So thinking I should keep up on them I had them "fixed." Now about a month later, I can not chew on my upper right side. It feels very painful (maybe a nerve?). I have told my dentist and gone in twice to have her grind down my teeth (to fix the bit apparently). However it never helps. I'm worried that it was a bad filling and worse yet that I may never get rid of this pain(or it turns into a root canal. I do not have a ton of money to get second opinions and just need to know what to do. I'm at the point that I don't want to go back to her yet she is my cheapest option. Please help!!

Question:Hi there,

About oh 15 years ago, I got a root canal on one of my bottom right teeth. Well I have a history of teeth problems, to the point of most of them are rotting out slowly but surely. Yes I need to get to the dentist, but I just can't afford it.

Now the question is, this evening after eating some steak my husband cooked for us, my root canal FELL OUT! Is this extremely serious? What should I do? The enamel around the canal was gone, essentially it was the root canal, hanging by the screw within the gums. Please help!

Thanks

Question:I recently went to the dentist, but before I went, I had a cavity in my bottom right tooth in the back. My gums were swollen and had jeering pains. To add..my neck hurt as well. I felta prickly pain, like a fishbon, was stuck in it. I could swallow, eat, talk and breath just fine. The only pain I had was when I tried to lay my head down...it would THROB to the point of I was in tears. It went from irritating to PAIN as if I had a blister down in my throat. (swallowing food actually soothed it) I think it was my lymph nodes. After the removal, the pain went away, even though I feel it every now and then slightly (it's been 4 days) and my tooth is better but........ When I had it pulled I left gauze in the location at night to help the coagulation. When I woke up, it was 'kind of' stuck, but I got it out. Now there is a horrible taste and smell coming out my mouth...like somethings rotten or like old rubber. That is the best I can describe it. I have no pain...just a nasty taste and smell. Is this normal and could the tooth have caused the fishbone feeling that is slightly lingering?

P.S I didn't go the ER for the prickly feeling because I was terrified that they would do something to cause me to throw up or gag. (I didn't want to say this but I have emetophobia...people that know me laugh and shake their head when I tell them this...but it is extremely scary & real to me.) My neck is still slightly swollen. Should I wait to see if it goes away.
I don't mind if you post this but please send me an email also of your advice.

Question:Hi Dr. Web,
8 weeks ago I had 3 wisdom teeth pulled. Both top ones and impacted bottom left one. I am 40 yrs old. Right off the bat my bottom one got dry socket. It took a week of treatments to make it better. All along though, I felt I had two problems. The dry socket pain and also extreme pain in my left cheek. There was a hard lump in cheek and felt like I was hit w/ a baseball bat. The doctor said it was probably a hematoma & in time it would go away. When dry socket was better he said I was done w/ visits. I still had cheek pain but trusted it would get better. Then, 1-1/2 weeks ago (6-1/2 wks post removal), My bruised feeling lump in left cheek started getting worse. Felt like it was swelling & more painful! Last Tues I went back to Dr. He said it was not normal. He put me to sleep again & said he found cottage cheese white puss he removed. Next day I told him the lump was still there & I didn't think he operated in right place. He assured me he did & said it was swelling from procedure. (I just knew he was wrong, since it was the same painful lump that began after wisdom tooth removal.) Anyways, I started to get sick and got a bad sore throat. Finally on Friday, he realized I was right. He said, oh, I feel the lump and that is not where I removed the puss from. He put me under again on Fri. to get to it. When I woke up, I was informed he had done "extensive mouth surgery" on me. I'm in so much pain! Apparently, he went back in through bottom gum and grinded some bone, probed around and ended up having to go far out to my cheek to finally find the lump. It was size of a grape. He removed a piece of it and cut up the rest into pieces. He has no answer as to why that happened after the wisdom tooth surgery. He said he's never seen it before. Have you ever heard of such a thing? What could it be? I've been on 2 different antibiotics now and my throat is better as of yesterday. I'm not feeling infected now, just lots of pain. (Could it have been caused by the needle of novacaine in my cheek? Could he have tweeked my cheek during the operation to cause it?) Thank you for any info you may have.

Question:I have an abscess and will require a root canal, but I have lost my state provided insurance, and the state keeps losing my paperwork. Now I have worsened pain in the area of my jaw that is swollen, and pus is leaking it out constantly. I have also suffered from feeling ill and having constant headaches. I am wondering if this is normal? and if there is anything I can do to subside the symptoms until I can get my insurance back.

Question:I recently went into the dentist because i had a broken tooth i had neglected to pay any attention to that was now in severe pain and black.
I am now scheduled for a root canal in a weeks time. My question is about crowns. I unfortunately cannot afford to have the crowning after the root canal. As far as I was lead to believe from my hygenist, not having the crown afterwards was possible but not recommended and I would likely be in pain again soon. After researching the procedures and complications related to tooth extractions I am now at a loss for a decision. I am afraid of having this root canal down without a crown to follow up, as I do want this tooth to be functional but do not want to experience any further pain or complications with it. I also do not want to push the matter of an extraction as I have been advised that this is painful and generally results in more complications and ends up being more costly in the long run.
Please give me any advice on this situation as I do wish to resume great dental health (now having taken 3 years paying little attention to my teeth) and I would be very upset to know that I am now unable to resume fair/good dental health after this point of neglection on my part.
Thank you!
Kristin E. Czarny

Question:I am experiencing a metalic taste in my mouth. I have several mercury fillings that were applied over 30 years ago. Is the mercury now just giving off the metalic taste and if so why am I experiencing this now and not earlier in my life. Would certain vitamins cause a metalic taste reaction? Also, my teeth feel like they have a coating on them. I have contacted my water treatment company so they could make sure my treatment facilty was functioning properly and also have taken a sample of my water to the County for chemical sampling. This test checks for iron, manganese, magnesium, copper, lead, arsenic, alkaline and hardness. Thank you for taking the time to research this and responding in a timely manner.

Question:Dear Dr Web,

I am writing to you with a question regarding my wisdom teeth. I have two wisdom teeth already on my upper and lower left jaw - they came through when I was about 20(4 years ago). However a few weeks ago I started to experience a high level of pain on my right jaw. I had a look in the mirror and noticed that it looks as though my wisdom teeth on the right side are coming through. I have been taking 500mg Ibuprofen to ease the pain, altouh these really aren't strong enough. I am suffering with jaw ache, ear ache and gum ache in the immediate area. I had an xray when my other wisdom teeth were coming trough and my dentist said that she could not see nay problem as it looked like they are growing straight.

I have been to visit my dentist a week ago and expressed my concern. She said that she is 'pretty sure' that they will grow through ok, the upper right is nearly allthe way through. Since then the pain has not subsided at all. I was wondering what you think of this? And also how long a wisdom tooth usually takes to break through the gum. The one remaining to come through on the lower right jaw is causing extremely high levels of pain now and I was wondering how long this can go on for? Anything you can suggest to ease the pain would aslo be gratefully received.

Also, I am due for a tonsillectomy within the next few months. Could this cause a further problem?

Thank you for your time and I look forward to your reply.

Question:My history is that I have been a chronic tooth grinder. Recently I had to go to a dentist because I flossed out a small portion of my bottom back tooth. They referred a periodontist and they told me I needed to have my bite rebuilt. They ground my bottom teeth to fit 8 'new teeth'. I have been wearing temporaries while they match the white of those teeth to the top six veneers I have on my front teeth (veneers I had installed six months ago by another dentist). Several situations related to matching the white of the teeth, losing the courier package with my teeth and miscommunication on their part has cause a delay in putting in my new 'bite' and I've had to wear my temporaries for 3 1/2 weeks longer than regularly expected. During this dental process a chronic illness (pituitary tumor) has flared up significantly, I have been severely depressed, fainted, and have had extreme debilitating fatigue. It has been suggested by someone this could be caused by the dental work. I don't know if this is possible but I have been very surprised how my health has significantly deteriorated and my tumor symptoms are extreme coincidentally during this time. Also I have talked to another dental patient from another state who has the same problem as me (rebuilding of bite) and their dentist created a retainer device that gradually introduces this new bite through stages before placing in the new 'built bite'. My dentist did not do this gradual process but just put in a temporary with the full bite immediately. I'm worried that "I dont' know what I don't know" and my periodontist is not doing the procedure in a way that helps my body adjust properly (hence the severe symptoms I am dealing with). Although they are very nice and apparently good at their craft (or so the lab technician has said), their delays have caused me concern about their professionalism and care for me. Can you comment? They will also be replacing my front bottom teeth and two more top ones with veneers during this process as recommended by them. Thank you for your help.

Question:I had #30 pulled 3 days ago. I went back to the dentist b/c I was concerned about the hole left behind turning white. My dentist wasn't there but the assistant told me that it meant it was healing properly and it was supposed to turn white, and then pink. It hasn't turned pink. Its gone back to the same appearance it was at first...which is black. Black blood I suppose. Its shrank a lot since I had the tooth pulled but she said that every day, the hole should close up a little bit more. It hasn't closed anymore. Its still too open for me to feel comfortable chewing on that side. It was a difficult extraction. She said she had to fracture part of the bone underneath b/c the roots had grown into it. When will it close up enough for me to eat on that side of my mouth again? It hurts really bad if I don't take any asperin and I'm very hungry. I've been living off of yogurt for several days now. My breath stinks nomatter how much I brush my other teeth and the "unpleasant" taste won't go away.
Also-I have a chipped tooth on the opposite side of my mouth. I'm afraid that if she can't fill it, it will have to be extracted also because I cannot afford the $630 for a root canal. But ,I never want to go through another extraction again. How long can I leave the chipped tooth in its condition. It doesn't hurt.

Thank you

Question:I took my 15 and a half year old son to the orthodontist last week. It was Kyle's first visit and the ortho said Kyle would have to wait until he's about 17 to start braces and then have jaw broken since his lower jaw protrudes some. Kyle and I were very disappointed since we were ready to get started on fixing his teeth. I have insurance through my work and Kyle is covered under Tenncare (Doral Dental) through his father. I got the impression the ortho was fed up with Tenncare telling him what he could and couldn't do. Should we go somewhere else or is it true that since kyle is still growing, he's have to wait until later to have jaw broken. Is there not another way to fix the bite without breaking his jaw? Thanks for you help!!!!

Question:when my adult teeth came in, thetwo front upper teeth each had 2 white spots in them and were near the gum line where they stayed for about 35 - 40 year. two years ago they started to drift down towards the edge of the teeth and are now causing the teeth to chip away..my dentist says the spots are probably from a lack of calcium in the makeup of the tooth. even though i've been telling him for two years that the spots were drifting downward he does not accept that thought because teeth dont grow. as a dentist i trust him but i dont accept that the teeth are not changing, because i see it. an opinion will be appreciated, thanks

Question:The upper right side of my teeth hurt when I move suddenly, such as shake my head vigorously. By the time I had got to the dentist, this wasn't occuring anymore. The dentist did not see a cavity. Now, the sensation is back! It's like a weird pain, and I can't pinpoint it in a certain tooth, and again, it only happens when I move my head in a quick motion. Any ideas?

Question:Three weeks ago, I went to the dentist for a deep cleaning. The Doc gave me a novacaine shot. Two days later, on the same side of my mouth I had jaw pains, and mouth irritation and could only open my mouth half way. I went to an ENT who gave me an antibiotic. The pain and swelling is mostly gone but my jaw only still opens half way. Any thoughts on my problem would be very much appreciated.

Question:I have an absess on a tooth that has a crown - my dentist has said there are several alternatives:

Try to remove crown and get to infection that way - but tooth may get broken

Drill into tooth - but may get broken

Leave absess and see how it goes

I have chosen leave absess for 6 months - but just wanted to check risk of my sinuses getting infected.

Can I not just burst absess??

I am trying to wobble crown to see if I can get it to come out.

Any advice

Question:Dear Dr.Web. 9 days ago i had my bottom right wisdom tooth pulled. When the dentist started pulling it he noticed infection underneath and gave me amoxil for it. He had to cut it in pieces and also cut the bone out around it for it to be removed. 9 Days later i am still in pain, i went back after 6 days and he rinsed out the socket and gave me a serringe to keep it good and clean. I was just wondering how long it takes the pain to go away i have been using ibuprofin that helps but only for 4 hours and it starts to hurt again along with pain in my jaw, it hurts to open all the way. What should i do. Thanks.
P.S. I am a smoker if it matters.

Question:Thank you for taking my question. Our 23 month old granddaughter had her top front left tooth knocked out in a fall on 1/26/06. A pediatric dentist removed the sliver and remainder of the tooth. We are heartbroken. Is there a dental appliance (partial or something) that can be utilized to replace the missing front tooth. We are teachers and are very concerned with her speech development and chewing/digestion. Thank you for responding. We live in WV - close proximity to VA and OH.

Question:My teeth are falling out! Crumbling is actually a better word for it. I have several symptoms from what is commonly known as meth mouth, but I've never done meth. I do have fibromyalgia. Is there any medical condition that would cause this? The roots are still intact and appear to be just fine. Is there anything I can do to stop this?
